Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty used a visit to London on Wednesday to pitch the Egyptian market to British investors and advocate for diplomatic solutions to the Middle East crisis, warning that military escalation threatens global supply chains.

During meetings with Varun Chandra and Minouche Shafik, economic, trade, and investment advisers to the British prime minister, Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s macro-economic reforms, its “Industry 2030 Strategy”, and a “State Ownership Policy” aimed at empowering the private sector and stabilising the foreign exchange market.

The foreign minister also met with chairmen, chief executives, and representatives of UK investment funds, urging them to capitalise on Egypt’s free trade agreements and opportunities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. He pointed to the government’s “Golden Licence” programme, which is designed to fast-track strategic projects, as a tool for companies seeking access to Middle Eastern and African markets.

British business representatives expressed interest in exploring new cooperation opportunities and expanding their investments, acknowledging improvements in Egypt’s investment climate.

In a separate meeting with the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Emily Thornberry, Abdelatty discussed the upcoming formation of an Egyptian-British friendship group in the Egyptian parliament. Foreign Ministry spokesman Tamim Khalaf stated that Abdelatty expressed a desire for the Speaker of the House of Commons and committee members to visit Egypt to enhance bilateral coordination on both economic investments and ongoing regional challenges.

Addressing broader geopolitical issues during a panel at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), Abdelatty cautioned that regional escalation threatens international shipping and energy markets. He stressed that military solutions will only deepen crises, stating that Cairo is working with regional and international partners to support a US-Iranian negotiation track.

Abdelatty noted that recent visits by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Gulf nations underscored that Gulf security is an integral part of Egypt’s national security, whilst rejecting any violations of Arab states’ sovereignty. He reaffirmed Cairo’s support for national state institutions and political solutions to conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon, adding that an independent Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, remains the core of regional stability.

Egypt has welcomed the implementation of the second phase of a $1bn development policy financing programme with the World Bank and is looking forward to launching a third phase, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Sunday.

The announcement came during Abdelatty’s meeting with World Bank Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa Ousmane Dione and International Finance Corporation (IFC) Vice President for Africa Ethiopis Tafara to discuss enhancing cooperation and supporting economic development.

During the meeting, Dione praised Egypt’s economic performance, noting that the economy has shown resilience against the fallout of regional escalation thanks to structural reforms and the adoption of a flexible exchange rate. He added that the government’s reforms have bolstered financial and monetary stability, improved the investment climate, and supported economic empowerment and social protection.

Abdelatty outlined the government’s commitment to continuing its comprehensive economic reform programme, highlighting the development of the state IPO programme and the expansion of its listed companies. Empowering the private sector is a top government priority, he said, noting that the state is creating an attractive investment environment through tax and customs incentives and the digitisation of services.

The foreign minister also stressed the importance of building on the outcomes of the World Bank President’s visit to Cairo in March. He called for expanding cooperation in health, water, energy, food security, and digital transformation, while maximising the benefits of the 2023-2027 strategic partnership programme.

Additionally, Abdelatty expressed a desire to broaden cooperation with the IFC in the electricity, tourism, and agriculture sectors, as well as in small and medium-sized enterprises. He also discussed opportunities to collaborate with the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency to support state-owned enterprises and maximise asset utilisation.

Egypt and Eritrea signed a maritime transport cooperation agreement on Saturday to launch a shipping line connecting their ports, as Cairo declared that the security of the Red Sea remains the exclusive responsibility of its littoral states.

The agreement was signed in the Eritrean capital in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki during a visit by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir. Al-Wazir stated the maritime pact and new shipping route will enhance logistical connectivity, support trade, and maximise the strategic locations of both nations. He added that Egypt is prepared to transfer its expertise in railways, ports, and maritime transport to support bilateral economic integration.

Addressing regional security, Abdelatty emphasised that the governance and security of the Red Sea are tied directly to the national security of bordering nations, asserting that non-littoral parties must not be involved in related arrangements or understandings. He confirmed Cairo’s support for Eritrea’s vision on Red Sea management, which stresses the unity and sovereignty of bordering states.

Reviewing developments in Sudan and Somalia, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s position on maintaining stability in the Horn of Africa, describing the region as a direct extension of Egyptian national security. He affirmed Egypt’s full support for Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside a broader commitment to supporting national state institutions across the region.

Acting on directives from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Egyptian ministers were accompanied by a private sector delegation. The business representatives met with Afwerki to explore commercial partnerships in priority sectors such as mining, transport, pharmaceuticals, and fisheries, as well as Egyptian-led capacity-building and training programmes for Eritrean cadres.

Afwerki, who requested his greetings be conveyed to Sisi, praised Egypt’s active role in supporting security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. Highlighting the historical relations between the countries, the Eritrean president expressed a commitment to advancing political, economic, and security coordination for mutual benefit.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that it is closely following the hijacking of the oil tanker M/T Eureka, which was carrying eight Egyptian sailors. The vessel was reportedly seized in Yemeni territorial waters and taken toward Somali waters near the Puntland region.

In an official statement, the ministry said Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has directed Egypt’s embassy in Mogadishu to monitor the sailors’ condition and provide necessary support. The statement added that Egyptian authorities are coordinating “at the highest level” with Somali officials to ensure the crew’s safety and secure their release as swiftly as possible.

Egypt and Tanzania welcomed positive developments in consultations aimed at restoring inclusivity to the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and rejected unilateral actions concerning the river, the Egyptian foreign ministry said on Monday.

The statements followed a telephone conversation between Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, and Tanzanian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo. Discussing water security, Abdelatty emphasised the importance of cooperation and integration on the Nile River to achieve mutual benefit. He highlighted the necessity of adhering to a spirit of consensus and brotherhood to restore inclusivity to the NBI in accordance with international law.

The two ministers also reviewed the Julius Nyerere dam project in Tanzania, which is being implemented by Egyptian companies. Kombo commended the efficiency and expertise of the Egyptian firms executing major developmental projects, including the dam. Both diplomats noted the project as a significant development in advancing bilateral ties and shared economic, investment, trade, industrial, and developmental interests.

Addressing wider regional developments, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region, Abdelatty and Kombo stressed the importance of supporting national state institutions. They affirmed the need to respect the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of states, rejecting any measures that could compromise stability or undermine national institutions.

The ministers agreed on the importance of adopting comprehensive approaches to address the continent’s security and developmental challenges, committing to enhanced bilateral and multilateral coordination to support shared interests, stability, and development.

Egypt is looking forward to fulfilling the requirements for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) during the coming period, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Monday.

Madbouly’s remarks came during a meeting with OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on the sidelines of a high-level conference in the New Administrative Capital. The event, organised in cooperation with Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, marked the conclusion of the first phase of the Egypt-OECD Country Programme.

Cormann expressed his anticipation for Egypt to join the organisation as a member and affirmed his commitment to coordinating with Cairo in this regard. The secretary-general praised the structural reforms undertaken by Egypt, noting that they have enabled the country to confront the economic repercussions of ongoing regional developments, and he stressed the importance of maintaining the current momentum in bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Madbouly emphasised the importance Egypt attaches to the organisation’s work. He noted that this close cooperation is reflected in Egypt’s involvement in several OECD committees, its membership in the organisation’s Development Centre, and its co-chairmanship of the MENA-OECD Initiative.

Welcoming the completion of the Country Programme’s first phase, Madbouly described it as a supporting pillar for national structural economic reforms and Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development. These efforts, he stated, contribute to improving the performance of the Egyptian economy and enhancing its resilience in the face of international and regional economic crises. The prime minister also expressed his desire to continue cooperation by launching a second phase of the programme.

Furthermore, Madbouly welcomed Egypt’s inclusion as a “participant” in the OECD’s Committee on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Entrepreneurship.

Highlighting Egypt’s co-chairmanship of the MENA-OECD Initiative for the 2026-2030 period, the prime minister stated a desire to continue coordination with the organisation’s secretariat to develop the initiative’s programmes and mechanisms. This coordination aims to meet the development priorities of the region’s countries and enhance the resilience of their economies, particularly given the economic fallout from the current regional escalation.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom, and several OECD officials.

Abdelatty expressed his appreciation for the close cooperation between Egypt and the organisation. He stated that the Country Programme has served as a pillar for national structural economic reforms, contributing to the strengthening of the Egyptian economy and the achievement of positive growth rates despite geopolitical challenges and successive global economic crises.

Meanwhile, Rostom commended the collaboration with the OECD, confirming that coordination with the organisation will continue in the coming period, particularly through various initiatives and memberships in different OECD committees.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani discussed strengthening bilateral ties and coordinating on regional developments during talks in Cairo, with Egypt reaffirming support for Syria’s unity and rejecting Israeli violations of its sovereignty.

In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said Abdelatty hosted his Syrian counterpart for expanded bilateral discussions attended by senior officials from both sides, including ministers responsible for industry and economy.

Abdelatty stressed the deep historical and cultural ties between Egypt and Syria, noting that Cairo’s position on the Syrian crisis since its outbreak has been based on supporting security, stability, and preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and state institutions.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, while emphasizing full respect for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and rejecting foreign interference in its internal affairs.

The Egyptian minister also underscored the need to combat terrorism and extremism in all forms, including addressing the issue of foreign fighters, to ensure Syria becomes a source of regional stability.

On regional issues, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s categorical rejection of Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty, condemning attempts to exploit the current situation to occupy more Syrian territory.

He called on Israel to adhere to the 1974 disengagement agreement and reaffirmed Egypt’s longstanding support for ending Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights.

The talks also covered broader regional developments, including US-Iran negotiations, de-escalation efforts, and the situation in Lebanon.

Abdelatty stressed the importance of coordinated regional and international efforts to prevent wider conflict and reinforce regional security and stability.

The visit comes amid increasing regional diplomatic efforts to reshape Arab relations and address rapidly evolving political and security challenges across the Middle East.

Egypt has intensified diplomatic outreach with regional and international partners to support de-escalation efforts and revive negotiations between the United States and Iran, underscoring the need for political solutions, Gulf security, and the protection of global navigation routes.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of calls with counterparts in Oman, Pakistan, and Kuwait, as well as Brazil and Canada, focusing on regional developments and ways to advance diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.

In discussions with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, both sides reviewed efforts to restart negotiations, stressing diplomacy as the primary path to securing a ceasefire, ending the conflict, and stabilising the region while avoiding further military escalation.

In a separate call, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasised the importance of pushing for a second round of talks between the United States and Iran, with both sides highlighting dialogue as the most viable route to reducing tensions and creating conditions for a broader settlement.

Abdelatty also spoke with Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, reaffirming Egypt’s full solidarity with Kuwait and other Gulf states following a recent drone attack targeting northern border sites.

He stressed that Gulf security remains an integral component of Egypt’s national security, highlighting the importance of safeguarding international navigation routes, particularly amid mounting risks to key energy corridors.

At the international level, talks with Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand addressed both bilateral relations and regional developments. On the Palestinian front, Egypt underscored the importance of advancing the second phase of the US plan, ensuring the sustained delivery of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and rejecting ongoing Israeli violations in the West Bank.
