A sharp military escalation is unfolding across the Middle East, marked by cross-border attacks, interceptions, and increasingly hardline rhetoric as hostilities expand across multiple fronts.

In Qatar, the Ministry of Defence said its armed forces intercepted an Iranian drone attack. Meanwhile, Iran’s military announced it had launched drone strikes targeting US support and accommodation facilities at Azraq Air Base in Jordan.

Jordan’s armed forces said they intercepted one missile and two drones over the past 24 hours. A security spokesperson added that authorities responded to 26 incidents involving falling debris and projectiles, with no reported injuries but minor damage to three vehicles.

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded in Beersheba and Dimona following Iranian missile launches for the third time in a single day. Emergency services reported that four people were injured after a ballistic missile struck Beersheba.

The Israeli military said it carried out more than 140 airstrikes over the past 24 hours targeting Iran’s missile systems in central and western Iran, signalling an intensification of retaliatory operations.

In the Gulf, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had struck Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, claiming the destruction of an aerial refuelling aircraft and an E-3 AWACS surveillance plane, along with damage to other aircraft. These claims could not be independently verified.

Iran’s military also said it had shot down an MQ-9 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz, raising the total number of drones downed by its air defences to 138.

Shahram Irani, commander of Iran’s navy, warned that any US aircraft carrier group, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, entering Iranian firing range would be targeted, adding that its movements are under constant surveillance.

A senior aerospace commander within the Revolutionary Guard said high-value US targets could soon be added to Iran’s strike list, signalling the risk of further escalation.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker, said the United States is planning a ground attack despite ongoing diplomatic engagement, reflecting a further hardening of official rhetoric.

Regionally, Youssef Raji, Lebanon’s foreign minister, condemned what he described as Iranian violations of Arab sovereignty. Meanwhile, Fuad Hussein said Iraq would not allow its territory to be used as a platform for regional conflict or attacks on neighbouring states.

Separately, Iran’s intelligence ministry said it had seized weapons shipments and dismantled alleged cells accused of espionage and transmitting military information.

The developments underscore a widening regional confrontation, with growing risks to security, energy flows, and global trade routes as tensions continue to escalate.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, has delivered a firm warning to Iran, stating that its assumptions regarding Gulf states are “wrong and dangerous,” amid rising regional tensions and continued attacks on civilian and economic targets.

Speaking at a press conference in Riyadh following a consultative meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers, Prince Faisal emphasized that Gulf countries are not parties to the ongoing conflict, yet have been directly targeted. He stressed that Saudi Arabia and its regional partners will not yield to pressure or “blackmail,” warning that their restraint “is not without limits.”

The minister highlighted that Iranian attacks have included attempts to strike key infrastructure, including Saudi oil fields early in the conflict, which were successfully intercepted. He noted that the pattern and precision of these attacks indicate long-term strategic planning rather than reactive responses, suggesting they are embedded within Iran’s broader military doctrine.

Prince Faisal dismissed Tehran’s justifications for targeting neighboring countries, particularly claims that such actions are linked to US presence in the region. He stated that these arguments are “not convincing,” especially given that Gulf states had clearly communicated they would not allow their territories to be used for attacks against Iran.

The situation has been further complicated by disruptions to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor. The near توقف of shipping has contributed to rising oil and gas prices, fueling concerns over global economic stability and supply chains. Prince Faisal described any obstruction of navigation as “unjustifiable” and a form of political pressure affecting both energy and food security worldwide.

Saudi Arabia indicated that ongoing diplomatic efforts will be followed by concrete steps to safeguard freedom of navigation, including the possibility of seeking international intervention to ensure compliance.

The foreign minister concluded that trust with Iran has been deeply undermined, and rebuilding it will take considerable time, particularly if attacks on the region continue.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam met Kenyan President William Ruto during an official visit to Kenya to advance strategic cooperation in water management, security, investment and regional stability, according to a statement from Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt.

During the meeting, Abdelatty delivered a written message from Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to President Ruto, expressing Egypt’s appreciation for bilateral relations and underscoring the elevation of ties to a strategic partnership. The upgrade followed the Cairo Declaration signed during Ruto’s visit to Cairo in January 2025.

Abdelatty said Egypt looks forward to convening the eighth session of the Egyptian-Kenyan Joint Committee later this year in Cairo. The session is expected to focus on defence, counter-terrorism, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, water resources and infrastructure, as well as expanding Egyptian investments in Kenya.

He added that Cairo is keen to strengthen economic cooperation in agriculture, agro-industry, livestock, fisheries and pharmaceuticals, while encouraging greater participation by the Egyptian private sector in development projects, transport infrastructure and logistics hubs.

On Nile water security, Abdelatty stressed the importance of cooperation among Nile Basin countries based on mutual benefit and consensus. He reiterated Egypt’s opposition to unilateral measures and its support for consultative frameworks grounded in international water law.

Sewilam said Egypt stands ready to expand technical cooperation with Kenya in groundwater drilling, rainwater harvesting dams, modern irrigation systems and capacity-building programmes. He also expressed Cairo’s support for Kenya’s efforts to enhance water infrastructure and climate resilience.

The minister further revealed that Egypt has proposed a financing mechanism initially valued at $100m to fund feasibility studies and support the implementation of dam projects in southern Nile Basin countries.

President Ruto, according to the statement, praised Egypt’s role in promoting stability in Africa and the Middle East and reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in line with the longstanding ties between the two nations.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss developing bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Iranian nuclear file.

The meeting also covered Egypt’s efforts to facilitate cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Egyptian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The two ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and praised the frequency of recent meetings and contacts between the two sides. They affirmed their desire to continue consultation and coordination on bilateral issues of common interest and to strengthen economic, trade, and tourism cooperation.

The ministers also discussed regional developments, foremost among them the situation in Gaza, stressing the need to stop Israeli “aggression,” ensure the entry of humanitarian aid, and reject the displacement of the Palestinian people.

On the nuclear file, Abdelatty emphasised the importance of continuing efforts to create conditions for a “satisfactory and sustainable” settlement between Iran and the IAEA that considers the interests of all parties and contributes to de-escalation, restoring trust, and creating a supportive climate for regional security and stability.

The visit follows a series of phone calls that Abdelatty conducted in recent days with both Araghchi and IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi, as part of an intensive effort by Egypt to mediate between the parties. The calls, which were made on a presidential directive to support de-escalation, aimed to create conditions for the resumption of negotiations between Iran and the IAEA and to bridge the gap between the various parties involved.

The ministry stated that these contacts are part of Egypt’s efforts to reach understandings that bring the views of Iran, the United States, and the European E3 countries closer, with the goal of allowing for diplomatic solutions and a return to the negotiating table to prevent escalation and support regional and international peace and security.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on Monday held separate meetings in Cairo with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Bahrain’s National Security Adviser Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa to discuss bilateral ties and the ongoing Gaza crisis, according to a presidential statement.

Presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy said Sheikh Mohammed conveyed greetings from Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and reaffirmed Doha’s commitment to strengthening relations and boosting joint investments.

Al-Sisi expressed appreciation for Qatar’s relations with Egypt, stressing the shared determination to elevate their partnership in line with current regional and international challenges.

The statement said both leaders, in coordination with the United States, emphasised the urgent need for an agreement on an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the swift and unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages and detainees. They also reiterated their rejection of any reoccupation of Gaza or forced displacement of Palestinians, underlining that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital remains the only path to lasting peace.

Al-Sisi further highlighted the need to launch reconstruction efforts in Gaza without delay and to prepare for the Cairo International Reconstruction Conference in coordination with the UN and the Palestinian Authority.

Later in the day, President Al-Sisi received Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, accompanied by Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who conveyed greetings from Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

The Bahraini delegation praised Egypt’s role in supporting regional stability. Discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation and the situation in Gaza, with both sides stressing the urgency of accelerating humanitarian aid delivery, rejecting the displacement of Palestinians, and working jointly to contain regional tensions and safeguard stability.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has accused Israel of committing a “systematic genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza, asserting that the war has shifted from political objectives or hostage negotiations to a deliberate campaign of “starvation and the liquidation of the Palestinian cause.” Speaking at a press conference, Al-Sisi said more than 5,000 aid trucks are stranded on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, unable to enter due to Israel’s control over the Palestinian side.

Amid worsening humanitarian conditions, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported Tuesday that 87 Palestinians were killed and 644 injured in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll since 7 October 2023, to 61,020, with 150,671 wounded.

Israeli Security Minister Yisrael Katz stated that the Israeli army would “professionally implement its policies” toward Gaza pending a cabinet decision. Israeli Channel 12 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is increasingly inclined toward a full-scale offensive to seize the entire Gaza Strip. A senior Israeli official told Reuters that “increased use of force is now on the table” following the collapse of indirect ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said Israel permits only about 40 aid trucks into Gaza each day, far below the 600 trucks required to meet basic humanitarian needs—deepening the risk of famine and disease outbreaks.

Gaza’s Health Ministry also reported 95 cases of the rare neurological disorder Guillain-Barré Syndrome, including 45 children. It warned of a “rapid and alarming spread” linked to water contamination and malnutrition caused by the blockade, noting three recent deaths, among them two children.

On the ground, Al-Qassam Brigades and Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades claimed attacks on Israeli military targets in the Morag axis between Rafah and Khan Younis, as well as in Gaza City’s Shuja’iyya neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, Israel’s security cabinet approved a new mechanism for the limited entry of goods into Gaza via vetted local traders under strict security protocols. Permitted goods will include basic foodstuffs, baby formula, fresh produce, and hygiene products, with payments processed exclusively via wire transfer and all shipments subject to comprehensive inspection.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held phone calls with his British and French counterparts to discuss the deepening crisis. In an official statement, Rubio expressed “deep concern” over the escalation and reaffirmed US efforts to push for a ceasefire.

Belgium’s Foreign Minister voiced support for the European Commission’s proposal to suspend Israel’s participation in EU research programmes. If Denmark secures a majority, this could mark the EU’s first tangible sanctions against Israel. The minister also criticised aid airdrops as “inadequate” and called for unimpeded ground access for relief deliveries.

Jan Egeland, Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, told Al Jazeera that Israel is “violating international law daily” in Gaza and the West Bank. He urged an immediate ceasefire and the full reopening of border crossings to prevent famine, warning that Israel’s far-right government includes figures linked to extremist settler groups seeking to seize Palestinian land.

Norway’s Finance Minister announced that the country’s sovereign wealth fund will review its investments in Israeli companies involved in the war and West Bank occupation, stating: “We aim to avoid investing in companies complicit in the war in Gaza or the illegal occupation.”

Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares also condemned any “illegal annexation” of Gaza or the West Bank, calling it a violation of international law that undermines the two-state solution.

In Egypt, authorities rejected a request by opposition parties to stage a protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Cairo on August 8. Madhet El-Zahad, head of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party, said the demonstration was intended as a peaceful show of solidarity with Gaza and did not address internal Egyptian issues. The request was denied by Cairo’s Emergency Affairs Court.

In Algeria, the Interior Ministry refused permission for 12 political parties to hold a nationwide march in support of Gaza, suggesting instead that events be held in enclosed venues. Citing a 1989 public assembly law, the ministry’s stance drew criticism from those who argue it contradicts Article 52 of the 2020 constitution, which explicitly guarantees the right to peaceful protest without prior authorisation.

The banned parties include the Movement of Society for Peace, the Workers’ Party, El Fajr El Jadid, Voice of the People, El Nahda Movement, Justice and Development Front, El Karama Party, Freedom and Justice Party, Good Governance Front, Union of Democratic and Social Forces, New Algeria Front, and the Hope for Algeria Party.

Meanwhile, Derya Türk-Nachbaur, a senior member of Germany’s Social Democratic Party, urged Berlin to join a European initiative led by Italy and Norway to evacuate and medically treat injured children from Gaza. She noted that Germany had already received Ukrainian children and could extend the same assistance to those suffering in Gaza.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe on Monday to discuss Egypt’s “existential” concerns over its water security and ways to boost bilateral ties, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, also attended the high-level meeting during the official visit to Uganda.

In a statement, the ministry said Abdelatty conveyed Egypt’s concerns regarding the Nile River and stressed the need to adhere to international law for shared water resources. He voiced Egypt’s rejection of “unilateral actions” in the eastern Nile Basin and affirmed that Cairo “will take all necessary measures under international law to protect its water security.”

“The waters of the Nile are an existential issue for Egypt,” Abdelatty told the Ugandan president.

The minister of water resources and irrigation reiterated that respect for international law on the Nile River is the basis for positive cooperation to achieve the common interest of all basin countries.

During the meeting, Abdelatty, who conveyed greetings from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, also called for the formation of a joint Egyptian-Ugandan business council to boost investment in sectors like construction, energy, and pharmaceuticals. He highlighted the potential for joint projects through a financing mechanism recently established by Egypt to support development in southern Nile Basin countries.

The officials also discussed regional security developments, including the situation in the Horn of Africa and counter-terrorism efforts.

For his part, President Museveni asked for his greetings to be passed to President Sisi and stressed his country’s keenness to enhance bilateral cooperation, the statement said.

Separately, Abdelatty and Sewilam also met with Ugandan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello, in Kampala. In that meeting, they discussed similar issues of economic cooperation and regional security, and Abdelatty delivered a grant of agricultural equipment and light transport vehicles to a Ugandan non-governmental organisation that supports youth and small-scale farmers.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met on Monday with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in the coastal city of New Alamein during an official visit focused on deepening bilateral ties and addressing regional developments, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

According to Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy, the meeting included a one-on-one session followed by expanded talks between the two countries’ delegations. Discussions centred on reinforcing the strategic partnership and enhancing coordination on regional security challenges.

At a joint press conference following the talks, President Al-Sisi said the two leaders discussed political and security conditions in the Horn of Africa, as well as expanding cooperation across political, economic, security, and defence sectors. He noted that the talks built on the political declaration signed in January 2025, which aims to elevate Egyptian-Somali relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Al-Sisi announced that both sides had agreed to activate the military cooperation protocol signed in August 2024. The protocol includes efforts to strengthen Somali security personnel and state institutions to combat terrorism and restore state authority across Somalia. He also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the African Union’s support mission in Somalia and called for predictable, sustainable international funding to ensure the mission’s continued effectiveness.

Al-Sisi praised President Mohamud’s efforts to promote national unity and fight extremist groups, reaffirming Egypt’s full support for all initiatives aimed at fostering political consensus and achieving lasting peace and development in Somalia.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said his visit sought to reinforce the historic ties between Egypt and Somalia. He expressed gratitude for Egypt’s continued support, especially in healthcare, education, and institutional development. “We are grateful for Egypt’s role in providing healthcare services in Somalia—services that were previously unavailable,” he said.

President Mohamud also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Egypt across various sectors, with a particular focus on boosting private sector partnerships and exploring mutually beneficial investment opportunities.

He extended a formal invitation to President Al-Sisi to visit Somalia, saying: “The Somali people are eager to welcome you warmly.”

The visit comes amid intensifying diplomatic engagement between the two countries, as the Horn of Africa continues to face persistent security and political challenges. Volatility in the Red Sea, a critical maritime corridor, has also raised concerns due to ongoing regional tensions and proxy conflicts.

The renewed Egyptian-Somali engagement is widely viewed as part of Cairo’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in East Africa by supporting regional stability, enhancing institutional resilience, and countering terrorism and economic fragility.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi reaffirmed Cairo’s unwavering support for Libya’s unity and sovereignty during a meeting on Sunday with Aguila Saleh, Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

The talks, attended by Egypt’s General Intelligence Service chief Hassan Rashad and Saleh’s political adviser Hamid Al-Safi, focused on the latest developments in Libya and ongoing efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement.

Presidential spokesperson Mohamed El-Shennawy stated that President Al-Sisi emphasised Egypt’s continued coordination with all Libyan stakeholders and international partners to push for an inclusive political resolution. He underscored the importance of holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as a foundation for long-term stability.

Al-Sisi reiterated that Libya’s security is intrinsically linked to Egypt’s own national security, stressing the urgent need for the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory to facilitate the restoration of state institutions.

He also expressed Egypt’s readiness to contribute to Libya’s reconstruction efforts, offering to share its developmental expertise and experience in state-building.

Speaker Saleh praised Egypt’s historic role in supporting Libya’s national institutions, describing Cairo’s position as a “cornerstone” for advancing the political process and restoring stability. He welcomed Egypt’s continued engagement in helping to prepare for national elections.

The meeting with Saleh came shortly after President Al-Sisi held separate talks in the coastal city of El Alamein with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA).

During that meeting, Al-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to preserving Libya’s territorial integrity and countering external interference. He stressed the need to develop a unified political roadmap that enables synchronised national elections.

Haftar, in turn, expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting Libyan security and stability, commending Cairo’s longstanding efforts since the onset of the crisis.

Libya remains politically fractured, with rival governments and military forces vying for control in the east and west of the country. Despite sustained international calls for unification, long-delayed presidential and parliamentary elections have yet to be held.
